During his short, eventful life, Modigliani had no success on the art market or with critics.
He died in 1920 and Jeanne Hébuterne followed in his footsteps. Their daughter Jeanne was adopted by
Modigliani’s sister Margherita. In 1930, with the Hébuternes’ permission, Giuseppe Emanuele Modigliani,

the artist’s brother and a socialist politician who lived in exile in Paris after Mussolini’s rise, will reunite

the remains of the two lovers in a grave at Père-Lachaise. What follows is legend.
